Four years fighting: my journey, my hope

My name is David L. Saunders Jr., and for the past four years, I’ve been on dialysis. This site tells the real story of living on dialysis while raising a family and fighting for a kidney transplant. Dialysis keeps me alive, but it demands a lot from me physically and mentally. This journey is about more than illness — it’s about hope, finding a living kidney donor, and getting a second chance at being the parent my children deserve.

A father's unwavering fight

Before all of this, I was a butcher. It’s a job that requires strength, stamina, and precision. Early mornings. Long days on your feet. I enjoyed it, and I was good at it. But when my health changed, my priorities had to change too. I made the decision to step away from my career because I needed to focus on two things: raising my twin boys and taking care of my health. My sons mean the world to me. Everything I do, every treatment I sit through, every appointment I make — it’s for them.

Dialysis: the daily commitment

Dialysis can drain you. Some days, it feels like it takes more than it gives. But even on the tired days, I’m still Dad. I’m still present. I’m still showing up. Whether it’s helping with homework, listening to their stories, or just sitting with them — those moments matter. Stepping away from work wasn’t easy, but I realized something important: sometimes strength isn’t pushing through at all costs. Sometimes strength is choosing what matters most. Right now, what matters most is my health and my boys. I’m still fighting, still hopeful, and still believing that better days are ahead. Dialysis is part of my story, but it’s not the end of it.

The gift of life: an eternal impact

If you donate to me, you'll be improving the quality of life not just for myself but for my entire family. You’d be a permanent part of me and my family’s lives, and we’d all be eternally grateful. I want my sons to see resilience, to see what it looks like to face something hard and not back down. I want them to know that no matter what, their dad never stopped fighting to be here for them. This journey isn’t easy — but it’s worth it. And I’m not done yet.
